Basic Surfing Info

The best thing there is to do on this planet is surf. There’s just nothing else that even comes close to generating the feeling you experience as you paddle like crazy to catch a wave, drop down the face, crank a hard bottom turn in the pit, and pull into the barrel as the lip throws out over your head. The desire for those perfect waves wreaks holy hell with the rest of your life. It makes you spend all your dough on plane tickets to crazy places just so you can risk your butt paddling over jagged reef and camping out on lonely beaches.

Surfing is a difficult and skillful sport enjoyed by people on beaches across the world. It requires using nothing but a board to be carried by the waves that are breaking on the beach. In order to really get up there on the waves, you must have not only the skill to do so, but also wave conditions that are perfect for surfing. Both of these are fairly hard to come by. This is what makes surfing such a challengingsport. But if you are able to get past these barriers, you will find that it is an exciting and rewarding pastime.  Read more

Dubai Can Be Real Hot And Cool Both By : Pinks Johnes

There is more about Dubai you should know apart from its breathtaking skyline and the trade and commerce. Specially, if you were about to finalise a travel plan to one of its famous sea beaches. Things like the law, political system, weather and traffic congestion are some of the key areas that require attention. This article gives you an account of the same important issues before you embark on with your much awaited sojourns.

Historical Background

Dubai was one of the first emirates to join the UAE, a unified group of seven Muslim majority states, when the British forces finally left the Middle East in 1971. The area is surrounded by Saudi Arabia and Oman and the shorelines unite with the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. A Supreme Council of Rulers is the governing body of the United Arab Emirates. This council consists the seven ruling Emirs as its members, who in turn appoint the Prime Minister and the various Cabinet berths for the federal government. Note that while the Supreme Council of Rulers has overall control of the complete UAE, Dubai is famous for the high level of autonomy that it maintains as far as its local development issues are concerned.

Normal Weather

Since the Emirate of Dubai is in the Middle East, the climate is naturally sub-tropical and what you might expect from a desert in the neighborhood. This is good news in terms of clear skies all the year. There is very little rainfall and most of it takes place during the winter season. Temperatures follow an extreme trend with the daytime temperatures of summer touching the 48 degrees Celsius, and the winters the 10 degrees Celsius marks. January is the coldest with an average temperature of around 24 degrees Celsius, while the hottest month of July may report back an average of 41 degrees Celsius mark.

Population Estimates

The United Arab Emirates constitutes a population comprising that of the ethnic Arab community and a huge number of expatriates from India, Pakistan, East Asian countries, United States and the members of European Union. The region has been witnessing an insessent inflow of the expatriates due to the ongoing trade and commerce activities, and this can be visualized through its sharp rise in population since 1995. It shot up to 3.1 million in the year 2000 from the 2.4 million mark in 1995.

The population registered in the case of Dubai was 689,000 and 862,000 in the years 1995 and 2000 respectively. Most of these counted people reside within the urban areas of Dubai, while a tiny fraction prefers living on in the neighbouring countryside farms.

Language, Holidays, Local Time and Religion

Arabic is the official language of UAE, but also spoken are some other languages. English enjoys being the medium of communication in the majority of trade and commerce activities, while Hindi, Urdu, Malayalam and some other dialects are spoken by the expatriates from India and Pakistan.

Dubai’s standard time runs four hours ahead of GMT and keeps unchanged through out the twelve month period. It runs one and one and half hours behind the Pakistan and Indian standard times respectively.

Islam is the official religion of all Arabian countries including the UAE. Dubai is no exception either in this context. As a result, the Muslim holidays and festivities assume a very significant role in its normal life. These holidays may keep varying from one year to another as per the Islamic calender.

Visa Issues and Transportation

Visa rules can vary for the travellers from different nations. Citizens of the western block of nations may walk out of the airport with a visa on their arrival. Visitors from the rest of world are not allowed the same kind of luxury though. Those who may be looking forward to carrying on with their business activities will have to get somebody local sponsorship first.

Buses and taxis are available for the transportation within Dubai, but it may not prove sufficient to those who may have plans of going outside of the city area. Hiring private vehicles is a much preferred option for this reason these days. Roads in and outside of Dubai are advanced in nature, but the general traffic sense may not prove out to be that much appealing. Be wary of driving on Dubai’s roads, if you were not fully aware if its existing traffic hazards, like the disorderly driving on the roads within and the wandering camels off the city limits.

Dubai’s government has initiated some steps recently to improve upon its general traffic scenario. There are several projects planned to carry out this task, including a floating bridge over Dubai Creek, upgrading of the First Interchange with a three-tier interchange, the Dubai Outer Bypass Road and the Sufouh Roads Network etc.

# Why Is Dubai Swarmed By Celebrities? By : Pankaj Mohan

If you looked on the various news headlines emerging from the Middle East, you will notice a substantial shift taking place in the manner they have been reporting about this region as a whole. From various military coups to the stories of political vendetta; from gun totting hostage takers to the unnerving interpretation of Islam; and from the so-called lack of democratization to the non existent human rights, the Middle East has always had to bear the brunt of hostile news reporting. But, the emerging trade and commerce and tourism activities in Dubai are fundamentally changing this long held stereotyped interpretation of the Muslim world now.

Don’t be surprised therefore, if the British footballer David Beckham and the Spice Girl Victoria are seen walking out of one of its famous five star hotels, or if the reigning formula one champion Michael Schumacher is spotted unwinding somewhere on its breathtaking shorelines. You will also come to notice some very famous names from the corporate world making regular rounds of this famous city. From top cine stars to sports celebrities and from the multi-billion empire holders to the average holiday making freaks, all are increasingly being seen on Dubai’s soil these days. This in itself, speaks a lot of how dramatically the world’s vision of the Middle East has transformed.

The next round of Dubai Tennis Championships to be held in February and March 2007 will be another treat for the tennis lovers and the media managers both. Names like the William sisters - Serena and Venus and Andre Agassi have played on this venue and enthralled the audiences in the recent past. Equally reported have had been the events like a friendly match organized between Andre Agassi and Roger Federer on the helipad of Burj Al Arab hotel. Tennis balls kept falling down inside the Arabian sea as the two players proceeded with some of their favourite strokes. Not too behind was Tiger Woods who made use of the same helipad for his golf practice. Woods was in Dubai to take part in the Dubai Desert Classic and couldn’t resist the temptation of practicing on such a breathtaking height.

If the celebrity spotting has become one of the new trends in Dubai’s social life, then so is the emerging competition among the hotel owners for making the best out of this pulsating market. They are making all efforts, like building of more niche hotels, to cap this upscale clientele. This means exclusively targeting the business travellers and the multimillionaires from across the globe. Apart from Dubai, Lebanon and Sharm El-Sheikh in Egypt have also been trying to raise their stakes. However, the former is well ahead in the race involving these three.

Dubai’s desire of opening its borers to the outside world has been well received and reciprocated by the latter. As a result we are witnessing the very fundamental image of the Middle East taking a new turn in the global environment. By allowing so many expatriates on its soil, Dubai has made its friendly intentions clear. Expatriates will continue on playing a crucial role in the local economy, hence making the exchange of the Arabian peninsula with the outside world stronger. It speaks of a pleasing scenario, which will continue to get on more shades with each passing day.

Let’s Go On an Adventure Trip By : Lee Dobbins

Thinking of going on a trip? Why not try adventure travel? You could be going on a vacation you’ll never forget! Adventure travel is an exciting way to spend your holidays with your family or friends and a great way to expand your horizons, meet new people, experience other cultures and learn new skills or maybe even a new language.

There are dozens of choices for the kind of adventure travel that can fit your interests and that of your family. Choose the adventure that will fit your hobbies and abilities or, if you’re feeling exploratory, try out some new things. Here are a few adventures categorized according to your enthusiasm level:

Relaxing Adventure Trips
1. Nature walks and hiking
2. Bird or animal watching
3. Saltwater and freshwater fishing
4. Cruises, Yachting
5. Culinary, Historical trips

Moderately Active
1. Going on a safari
2. Environmental exploration
3. Dude ranches and horseback riding
4. Digging for archeological artifacts
5. Swimming with marine animals or diving

Very Active
1. Extreme sports (wakeboarding, skydiving, zero-gravity, bungee jumping, wind tunnel, flying)
2. Rock climbing, mountain climbing, ice climbing
3. Dog sledding
4. Touring/Mountain biking
5. Expeditions

There are dozens of adventure companies who specialize in travel adventure. Go to their websites and check out their offerings. Even your travel agent may have a department that offers adventure trips. Ask for a brochure and talk to the sales person to discuss your choices.

Before going on a trip, here are a few reminders to make sure it’s as smooth sailing and hassle-free as it should be:

- Talk to the adventure company and make sure you know what is in the adventure package so you know what to expect. Ask the company or call up foreign embassies to inquire about visa requirements.

- Bring your own first aid kits, prescription and emergency medication. Most companies will provide first aid and some medical assistance, but it’s best to have a kit handy. And, since you’re going on an adventure, the nearest pharmacy may be a dozen miles away.

- Be sure to have photocopies of your important documents - passports, visas, identification, reference numbers, credit cards and the like. Keep a set with you and leave another with somebody you can trust to fax it to you should you need it. Have your documents scanned and save them in your email just in case you lose or misplace them.

- Bring extra photos (passport size is good). Some countries require photographs for documentation.

- Check your travel insurance.

- Get the addresses and contact information of your embassies in the country you’re visiting.

- Get medical advice. Ask your medical practitioner what you need to do to protect yourself. You might need to have vaccine shots done a few weeks prior to your trip. Inquire also what medical or health hazards you should watch out for in the particular area or country you are planning to visit.

- Make sure that you are physically and emotionally ready for the kind of adventure that you signed up for. If you have a fear of heights, then a hot air balloon will not be a good idea. Sure, it’s an adventure but scaring yourself is really unnecessary.

- Read as much as you can about the country you’re visiting - its people, customs and traditions. Remember that when you visit a country, you are a foreigner there and as a sign of good will, why not show respect for certain traditions or customs by being aware of them and avoid offending anyone.

- Pack lightly and bring the right kind of clothing. Waterproof, sun-protected clothing with breathable fabrics are good ideas. Pack also some essentials like a flashlight, sewing kit, toiletries, lighter, tape, safety pins, padlocks, all-in-one-knives and even plastic bags for extra containers.

- Be sure to bring the right kind of footwear. Some of the best adventure trips have been ruined because of the wrong kind of shoes. Besides, the type of shoes you need or your size may not be readily available in the country you’re visiting.

- Be sure to find a safe way to carry around your money and credit cards. On trips, there is always a chance that you will spend more than you planned, so bring extra cash and keep it in a safe place. During the trip, don’t touch it unless absolutely necessary. Make sure too that you have access to banks and ATMs just in case you run short.

Lastly, remember that even the best laid plans can suffer from glitches. Don’t expect too much and be flexible enough to fully enjoy your adventure while you’re there. No vacation is perfect, but with the right attitude and thirst for adventure, each trip will be as uniquely inspiring as it will be unforgettable.
